Introduction:

Hello. We are group of students from Canada. We are international students from all over the world. All of us are going to Senator O Connor College School, which is a Catholic high school in Toronto. Toronto is the biggest city in Canada. All studens in our class are from 10th to 12th grade.

Hello. My name is Katarina. I am going to Senator O Connor high school in Toronto, Canada. I am 18 years old. My origin is from Slovakia. I came to Canada to study English. My hobbies are shopping, painting and skiing. My favorite subjects are biology and chemistry. I think that children rights are very important, because children still cannot defend and care about themselves like adults, so the children rights should be upheld by adults.

On the 26’th of June I was born in Sn. Fernando Pampanga. My parents named me Vanessa Francine. I migrated from Philippines to Canada. I’ve been studying English for about 8 years since preschool. My favorite school subject is Science. I love listening to music. I like  watching movies while eating popcorn and love traveling different places.

Hi, my name is Clori Cai others call me Clori, i came from China,ShenZhen. I have a brother 2 years older than me, we don’t have good relationship though. I’m 17 years old now, time pass fast, i came here since 2015 September. Well, maybe i have a little bit kind of character defect, though i tried hard, there is actually few friend, like two. I learn English as second language, seriously i learn English since primary school. My hobbies are shopping, travel, do9ng something interesting.

What do i think of children’s right? I think every one have the right to be educated not to be lack of daily needs they have the right to be loved. The children rights i know for China is if their score is good enough and go to a public school they don’t have to pay for middle school and high school, and some certain primary school too, but they normally have to go to the designated school depend on the area they live. I think it is important to realize the issue of children rights, but the more important is to do something for them.

Hi, my name is Rex Huang, and I’m from China and I’m 16 now. I have learned English for many years and that is my second language. I can speak Chinese and Cantonese. I think I am good at sports and I am in the Rugby team now. I like math and P.E.  I have lots of interests. Not only the sports,  but also the films. I like watch funny movies because that can make me less stressful and make me laugh out loud.

I really care about the children’s rights. I think some areas in the world, the children’s rights are not been focused enough. I hope that kind of situation could be better in the future. That’s my opinion. Thanks for reading.

Hi, my name is tony li, and I’m from China and I’m 16 now. I have learned English for many years and that is my second language. I can speak Chinese. I like watching anime and I also like to play video games. My favourite subjects are math and P.E.  I have lots of interests. Not only the games, but also the films especially funny ones.

It is my pleasure to introduce myself. My name is Kioh Lin, and I am sixteen. I have been learning English for ten years. There are lots of sports I like to play, such as basketball, badminton, and soccer. I also like singing. I can sing R&B and pop. I am a big fan of Maroon 5, probably Adele is also my favourite singer. I am from China, it is universal acknowledge that China is a great country with a big number of population. As an international student, I have

been to Canada for three months. I lived in Toronto, the city which is one of the core city of North America.

From my point of view, children’s rights are really important for children, they must be protected, only if children’s rights be protected, children will grow up in a right way.

I came to Canada from 2 month. My favorite school subject is math. I am in Senator O’Connor college school. I was in Philadelphia Private School in Dubai. The children’s rights should be very  important for everyone, because children cannot defend themselves, and if I go to school every child must go to school.

Hello my name is Sara Saba. I am sixteen years old.I used to live in Lattakia, Syria. I moved to Canada last month. I go to a school called “Senator O’Connor College School “ in Toronto, Canada.

I have been studying English since kindergarten. My favourite subject is Dramatic Arts, because acting is already my hobby.

Children’s rights are very important because without having the basic rights for any child , the new generation will not be able to take responsibility of the country and be an active member of the community which will lead to a very weak society.

Contributions Challenge 1:

We were not able to complete this challenge on time due to a provincial literacy assessment Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) which took place on March 30th. It is a graduation requirement, so all high school students in Ontario must write this exam . If we don't, we cannot graduate from high school.

Our regrets if this makes your task harder. We will try to make up for it in Challenge 2.

Article 27: Every child has the right to a standard of living adequate for the child’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development.

With whom do you feel happy?

For us, we feel happy whenever we are with our friends and whenever we talk and tell stories to each other. It makes us feel happy when we bond together and do fun things. Like going to the mall together or visiting each other’s house and sometimes going to church together and after have road trip.

What makes a house home?

It makes a house home when in the house there is a family living together. A house is called home when in your house you care, love, help, appreciate, and understand each other. When you fight, you lower your pride and forgive each other. A home is built with a family that has unity and do things together.

Name basic needs you find important.

The basic needs that I find important is God, food, water, shelter, school, and clothes. Before everything else, God should be the #1 in your list that you need, because he is the reason why you live you life, you should thank him for all the blessings that you have in life. Just waking up in the morning is a big blessing that God gave you. We also need food to fill up or stomach and to have the vitamins and nutrients for our body to be strong. Without water we can’t live because half of our body is made out of water. A human can’t live with only food but with water it can live for months. We also need shelter to live in, if we live in the streets all the bacteria, the virus will enter our body and make us weak. School is important because every person should go to school to learn. We have our own brains to use it for learning not just waste it. Lastly, clothes is also important because we need to cover up ourselves especially when it’s the cold season, we need to wear thick clothes so that we won’t catch a flu and be sick.

Who should take care of these?

Everyone and their families must take care of these children that do not have a house or somewhere they can stay at. All of us should help each other and take care of these children because after we all die, they are the next generations that will live the earth and have their own families.

If your parents couldn’t take care of you; who would?

“Back home in my country I live with my grandparents and my aunt so they are the ones who take good care of me since I was born in 2001. I grew up in my mother’s side. My mom left me with grandparents and my aunt when I was about 2-3 years old. My dad didn’t really stayed at my grandma’s house and he prefer to stay with his parents.” -Vanessa

“I think my grandparents will take care of me.” -Tarek Saade

“If my parents did not take care of me,I guess my family ,like my aunt or uncle will take care of me.” -Sherry.

Do you have the right to everything you like or want?

Yes, we have the right to everything we like and want.We can go to school and learn a lot of subjects. And also we can go anywhere we like.We are free.

Do you have to do everything for the people that take care of you?

We think that we have to do everything to show how much we are thankful for what they’ve done for us.

We have also researched companies that use or sell products from abroad. We investigated how those companies inform us as a consumer about the amount of child labour used.

APPLE

Apple  is an American multinational technology company which set up on April. 1st, 1976 , that designs, develops, and sells consumers electronics, computer software, and online services. It is the largest worldwide informational company by revenue. Essentially, it is a huge institution with high income. Its sales are high-quality but kind of expensive. Most of information is given by the news report website, by uncovering child labour in its supply chain. They produce  in China and any other developing countries around the world. Tim Cook actually has taken sort of measures to combat child labour in Chinese factories which belong to Apple company, like went to China by himself to check the supply chain, but seemed like it did not work for this case. Apple company had experienced much difficulties in combating child labour, but there were so many people in China, even for children. Furthermore, the man in charge of the Chinese part of Apple company even ignored this case. Therefore, they could not eternally combat child labour.

WALMART

Walmart is a biggest prosperous and successful company in all over the world. Walmart was established in July 2, 1962, in bentonville, Arkansas. In 1950 sam walton purchased walmart 5&10 to luther Harrison. Is the company successful? What are its sales like? The company is successful because you can buy everything you wanted too, like home  apparels, furniture, jewelry, grocery, clothes and even toys. Their sales is according to department of statistics, that show the total net sales of its product finance budget. The company inform me about child labour because I’m thinking about the manufacturers, the  workers, how they distribute their products, what kind, and what storage.. I’m thinking about where is its came from, and especially the workers that mostly children forcing to work in 90 to 110 hours in 7 days a week, 6.5 cents per hour and no good sanitation and no use personal hygiene. In Asian country, China sweatshop, Bangladesh clothing factory and seafood thai corp. in Thailand. The company takes measures to combat child labour in their production lines, Walmart says they can only pay for the penalty that many accusation and controversy that facing walmart against child labour, especially in Bangladesh clothing factory that the building collapsed through the unsafety fire precautions and harsh condition  in a factory. Sometimes children sleep in the floor and they cannot afford any personal hygiene like toothbrush, sometimes they use their fingers to brush their teeth.

ADIDAS

Adidas is a  German multinational corporation that designs and manufactures sports shoes, clothing and accessories. It is founded by Adolf Dasler who is also known Adi Dasler. He found this company on August 18 1949. The headquarters of Adidas is at Herzogenaurach, Bavaria Germany. In 1924 and embarked on his mission to provide athletes with the best possible equipment. 1949, Adi Dassler started over again at the age of 49, registered the “Adi Dassler adidas Sportschuhfabrik” and set to work with 47 employees in the small town of Herzogenaurach. On the same day, he registered a shoe that is soon-to-become-famous adidas 3-Stripes. 1972 From Herzogenaurach to the world: the 3-Stripes kept expanding to more and more sports throughout the years. This is reflected in the broad range of athletes who trust adidas to make them better

Instead of making the adults work, they make the children work because they know if they make the children work they just have to pay small amount of money but if the adults are the ones who’ll work they have to pay higher amount of money. The children are told what to say. They have to tell them we're paid the minimum wage, and they mustn't tell them they work overtime at weekends.

They [the management] get people to hide in bathrooms, so there are fewer people on the production line and it looks more efficient. If Adidas wants to ask questions, the workers are prepared beforehand with questions and answers. They can never tell the truth, otherwise we might lose our jobs.

The top five countries per region by number of supplier sites were:

  • The Americas: United States, Brazil, Canada, Argentina and Mexico

  • Asia: China, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan

  • EMEA: United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey, Italy and Spain.

Adidas Group worked with 67 licensees whose suppliers sourced products from 448 factories in 49 countries.

An example of country where they manufacture their products is Indonesia. There they make children do their products. Why? Because if the adults do it the higher they pay the adults money but if the ones are working for them are children then they’re just gonna pay them low amount of money.

From what I’ve read from the websites adidas is not trying their best to stop child labour. They still do it.

NESTLE

The logo of nestle is the Nest, and that goes back to Henri Nestle the founder of the company, who was a german pharmacist, the company was established in 1866 when Henri Nestle first released the “Farine Lactee” in Switzerland which was a mixture of white flour, cow milk, and sugar. This product was first released for children that can’t be breastfed , and that is why the logo have in it a mom bird feeding it’s children birds to tell you that even you can’t breastfeed your child, you still can take care of them and make sure he grow healthy. Nestle sells chocolate, chocolate powder, milk, coffee, and water.

Nestle company is really successful, last year, its sales was 88.79 BILLION dollars. Nestle denied its use of child labour, instead, the company built a school in Ivory coast.  Nestle has factories in more than 86 place in the world.

The company donated to build a school in Ivory coast, since Ivory coast is the their first supplier in cocoa beans.

There are still a lot of children working in Nestle’s cocoa farms for long hours, carrying a lot more weight than they can take, getting beaten and sleeping in a no-windows room with barely enough food to eat every night.

Nestle’s company pays only 3.71 dollars for every million liters of spring water, and sell it for 2 million dollars after bottling them.

In addition, every bottle of water have a recycle sign on the bottom of it, but did you know that the lids of the bottle is not recyclable???? So every day you throw a bottle of water thinking that it’s recyclable….you are hurting the environment.

TOYS 'R US

Toys ‘R’ Us is an American toy store that was founded in Washington D.C in the United States, it was

founded in 1948. Toys ‘R’ Us sells all kinds of toys for different ages and for both genders. It’s not only

toys r us, there’s also babies r us but it has to do with babies only. Toys ‘R’ Us was founded by Charles

Lazarus, he was inspired by his uncle who was in the baby furniture business. After that he opened his

first baby furniture store in Washington D.C which was children’s bargain town.

Toys ‘R’ Us is very famous, there’s stores everywhere, that means its sales are pretty high.

Toys R Us reported the financial results for the year 2013, the net sales were worth $5.3 billion dollars.

The company is successful, it’s been here since 1948, there’s about 1800 stores all around the world.

And another thing is that there’s plans for movies to be filmed in the toy aisle in the store, it’s not for

sure yet but there’s an 80% chance that it will happen this year.

Toys ‘R’ Us informs us about child labour by not talking about it at all, toys r us one of the biggest

children’s toy and clothing retailers in the country has remained silent and stated that it does not

knowingly engage in businesses with retailers that are in violations of law affecting labour usage, child

labour and their safety. They refused to support human rights and speak out against forced child labour.

Child labour in Toys R us happens in Uzbekistan.

Toys R Us did not completely get away with what they did, they had to pay a 200000 fine and institute

new safeguards in all of its stores after inspectors turned up some violations of child labour laws. The

department of labour said that they found more than 300 young toys r us employees working more

hours and later into the night than allowed by law, the violations involved 14-15 year olds who stock

shelves, operate cash registers and clean the store.

They did not take measures to combat child labour. They force kids all over Uzbekistan to drop out of

school and they leave them in cotton mines to pick cotton in the harvest season, they even took away a

boy’s life back in 2015, he was suffocated by the cotton when he was sleeping next to a van full of

cotton.

And another thing they do, they let young kids make the toys and work under bad conditions.

GAP

Gap was found in 1969 by Donald and Doris fisher, they sell clothes and shoes. Over 46 years the company has grown from a single store to a global fashion Business.

Gap is a very famous store and they make a billions of dollars per year but from 2009 till 2012 the sales starts decreasing because of the child labour they were using a child in there productions.

The company said this is completely unacceptable and we do not ever , ever condone any child labour making our garments.said the president of gap.

The gap started manufacturing their products in San Francisco, and they start manufacturing in india because low cost of the production and the uses of the child.the have more than 150,000 employees in both of the companies most of them child in India.

The company says that they didn’t use child labour to make their product in India.

The ABC news says that they saw child working for gap and they ask them if they get paid or not some of them said that they didn’t get paid because their were still training. Gap has more than 3,300 shops in different 90 countries.and its meke 75 billion dollars per year.

WALT DISNEY

The Walt Disney company started on October 16,1923 as the Disney brothers cartoon studio,a joint venture on Walt Disney and his brother,Roy.In 1932,the walt disney company won its first academy for best carton.1934 marked the production of disney’s first full length feature film, snow white and the seven dwarfs, which released in 1937 and become the highest grossing film of its time. The Walt Disney Company is the Forture Global 500. Disney’s domain include many parts. It include Disneyland, cartoon and movie.

By moving the factory to China, “young people are forced to work 10-13 hours a day producing Disney’s children’s books six or seven days a week” .  They also only get paid 33-41 cents an hour, which is even below the minimum wage of 42 cents an hour in China.  Not only do workers get cheated of their overtime pay, but they also faint from exhaustion due to the unbearable heat in the factories.  The fact that people aren’t allowed to take breaks is also a contributing factor ("Santa's Workshop - Inside China's Slave Labour Toy Factories").  No adult, let alone a child, can handle such harsh working conditions. Those factories are in China,Bangladesh and Haiti.

While the Walt Disney Company human rights section states that, “we are committed to combating the exploitation of children and therefore prohibit any use of child labor in the manufacture of Disney-branded products, but this situation still exists. Disney not only use the child labour to make their products, but also have the sweatshop in developing countries.

COCA-COLA

Coca-Cola was born in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States in 1886, it sales different

kinds of beverage.

Coca-Cola is very successful, it sold 19400 bottles of drinks at about a second. Currently

the world's largest beverage manufacturers.

The Coca-Cola Company firmly opposes the use of child labour, the company said they

has signed a business agreement with the guidance principles of the child labor law.

Coca-Cola first production in Philippines, and later spread to the rest of the world.

The manufacturer of Coca Cola let the child in the sugarcane harvesting and produced

cans in steelmaking plant, and pay them a very low salary.

Their behavior has been discovered by some investigators and published in the online,

that has attracted worldwide attention.

In 1886, Coca-Cola was invented by a pharmacist named John Pemberton, otherwise known as

"Doc." He fought in the Civil War, and at the end of the war he decided he wanted to invent

something that would bring him commercial success. Usually, everything he made failed in

pharmacies. He invented many drugs, but none of them ever made any money. So, after a move to

Atlanta, Pemberton decided to try his hand in the beverage market. Finally, Coca-Cola was invented.

Feedback from: National College B P Hasdeu

Play is fundamental to all aspects of child development and is a key component in preserving community and culture, in the broadest sense.Play can be a vehicle for children to pass on their culture, for sharing between generations, and for children to communicate their feelings and ideas to adults. Through play young children learn to become active participants in community. Play days and play festivals are a major form of celebration of culture and community around the world. Play is also a way for children to gain a sense of control over difficult circumstances as witnessed in hospital settings and in war zones. The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by Canada in 1991, requires governments:To recognize the right of the child...to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate for the age of the child...To encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic, recreational and leisure activity.

We are having a Skype meeting with Hope School group:
                                                      on May 26th

                                                       at 9am EDT

Completion:

The assignment:

In collaboration with UNICEF we as GTP have launched a 'writing contest' that allows you as LC-participants to speak out and raise your voice.

We ask you to write a paper (about 500 words) to the jury of GTP in which you include:

• A brief class introduction, so the jury understands who you are as a class and where you're from.

• Your lessons learned and eye-openers during the Learning Circle process.

• Design a plan to improve at least one children's right.

How can your plan improve the conditions in the lives of children?

Describe what motivated your group or class to make this choice and why you think this specific plan deserves the attention of the jury.

Hello,

We are students from Senator O’Connor College School in Toronto, Canada. We are an ESL class (English as a Second Language) from all around the world. Specifically, there are students from the Philippines, Syria, China, and Slovakia. For the GTP, our class studied child labour, specifically big companies around the world that are guilty of using child labour. Some companies we studied are Zara, Apple, Coca Cola, Adidas, The Gap, Disney, Toys R Us, Walmart, and Nestle.

Some things we learned throughout this project that surprised us were that you spend a lot of money on expensive clothing that are made by children who are not getting paid enough (if at all). The big companies continue to get richer, at the expense of children’s rights and happiness. We are disgusted that some children have lost their lives in the process of producing things like toys and clothing. One of the most shocking things we learned was that many children who work on the cocoa farms have no idea what cocoa is and what it is used for. Furthermore, we were amazed to see that the CEO of Apple denied the use of child labour in the company when there is clearly proof of this.

Some ways we think the conditions of children’s lives can improve are:

-start a petition where millions of people can sign it to raise the age of when a child can work.

-Bring forth awareness by presenting this information at schools, telling friends about it, trying to get the media’s attention, and creating pamphlets with information.

-People can also donate or sponsor a child in a poor country so that they can have an education.

If families in these countries receive donations, then their children will not have to work for them to survive. They will also have a chance to go to school.

We hope that our contribution will help at least one child have a happy and labour free life.

Kind  regards.

Evaluation:

Some things that we valued in this GTP experience was that students were able broaden their horizons regarding children's rights. We liked the videos and prompts that were provided for students to receive direction.

Some things we feel could be improved upon are:

-Larger flexibility in assignment completion due to different curriculum expectations in different countries.

-Limit the assignment options so that schools that give each other feedback are on the same page. This would bring forth more consistency.

-More organization with a Skype date. There was too much miscommunication when trying to organize a Skype meeting. Clear directions i.e. providing emails of facilitating teachers so that there is better communication.

-The level of technology varies for all involved, which makes certain assignment difficult to complete.

-The Wiki organization is lacking in the sense that each component should be better housed in its own folder. Instead, everything is on one huge page.
