Contributions Challenge 1:

As a warming up we read the free downloadable pdf document of Unicef about Hard journeys for schoolchildren.

You can download that PDF from Unicef here http://thinkvalues.cambridge.org/content/Think_Values_Access_to_Education_lesson_plan.pdf

1. What difficulties do children in these places face to get to school?

1.Extreme cold and they come back home in the dark.

2.They have to cross an very dangerous bridge/river.

3.They walk on the side of the mountain.

4.They walk over railroads.

2. Reasons why these children are prepared to face the challenges:
Because they need education for their future to earn money and they can then take care of their poor families. Then they
meet other children. They want to be smart. They want to do something else than having holiday forever. To have fun with each other. To be together with other people (social contacts)
There are a lot of different ways to go to school. In the Netherlands a lot of people go to school by bike, or by bus, car or train for example. But in other countries there are some ways that we, people in the Netherlands, think are really weird. Like going to school by sitting on the back of a donkey, or cross a really dangerous and big river. It’s almost like they are willing to do literally anything to be able to go to school and learn something. Kids in the Netherlands usually go to school because their parents tell them they have to, but in other countries like Africa they have to go to school to get a job, and earn money. This is important because their parents can’t afford everything, the kids have to help. If they don’t, they can starve from not having enough food and water.

3. Make a list (of 3 more) obstacles for education

1.Not having enough money to pay school fees.

2.Don’t have a school at all.

3.Having a disease.

4.Dangerous animals

5.You need money to pay school

6.Rivers and mountains

7.It’s really cold outside

8.Dangerous animals who can hurt them.

9.Busy traffic

4. Why do YOU go to school?
Herman: I want to have a good education to get a good job later, so I can earn enough money to take care of my family.
Marit and Annemijn:
We are going to school because we would like to learn new things. And when we are older we want a good job, a good knowledge is fine to have.
Rosalie: because I have to go and I want a good future.
Sara: I go to school to learn the basics, and with that knowledge to do further education. So later I get a job with a good salary to support myself and my family, and that I can live a happy life.
Thomas: I go to school because I want to learn things so I can get work if I’m older.
Isabel and Tess: We go to school because we want a good education so we can have a good job later. Even though school is sometimes a bit boring, you still learn stuff every day.

Joy: I go to school, because I would like to become smart. If I am educated well , I have more options for a job later. I would like to become a detective or a lawyer.

Gabriella: I personally go to school because I think it’s really important to accomplish something in life. I also think it’s also important to get a really good job and earn money. The worst part of school for me is having to wake up really early and get ready.

5. How did you raise money for the school in Nepal.
Herman: I have washed some cars in my neighbourhood. I helped my sister with her homework and I did some other household chores. My parents gave me some money for that which I donated to the school in Nepal.
Marit and Annemijn: raised money for Nepal by baking cupcakes and cakes.
Gijs, Job, Mart and Thomas: raised money for Nepal by collecting refund bottles and bringing them to the local supermarket.
Rosalie: raised money for Nepal by selling food.
Sara:  I have sold croquet monsieur’s with other children from my class, it was a very nice experience.
Tess and Isabel: Making cupcakes and cakes for the work of Tess’ parents and a few others birthdays and events.Luuk raised money for Nepal by selling cakes.

Joy has raised money for a charity. We have done a sponsorship for Nepal. Last year, there was an earthquake and they lost everything. Our school is going to Nepal  with a few students. They are going to build a new school there for the Nepalese children. On a normal school day, I sold sandwiches with other classmates in the canteen of the school.

Jet, Hanneke and Gabriella raised money for charity. There was an earthquake in Nepal, so our school decided to help them as much as we can by raising money in a lot of different ways, like baking cookies, selling keychains or like we did, returning plastic bottles to the supermarket to earn money from packaging deposit money. We earned €50,-.

Evaluation:

Evaluation Learning Circle:

We are class 2ha1 from the Grundel Lyceum in Hengelo. We are thirteen, fourteen or fifteen years old. We are a mixed class with boys and girls. At the end of our school we will go to Higher Vocational Education or the University and get a good job.

Introduction texts: We really liked it but we spent too much time.

The introduction was very funny but some people didn’t want to share their privacy and it was one big chaos. It took too much time before everything was uploaded.

But overall, it was a funny project that taught us how to handle children’s rights.

Introduction mp3s: We didn’t want to do the mp3’s because sometimes it didn’t work well and the intro it was okay but it wasn’t fun either so our group just didn’t like it. It took very long to upload and some kids didn’t even upload so that didn’t work out that great.
Skype review:
We skyped with Canada, and it was fun. The WIFI was terrible but in the end it was okay. The people who we skyped with, were very kind. The kids in Canada were a little bit older than us. They are around 15 years old and we are around 14 years old.

We would like to improve the right of safety. Because of the wars in the world. There has to come a charity for poor people that cannot go to school. We think that every rich person has to donate some money to the charity. Another solution is that the government gives money to parents who have not enough money to send their child to school.

Feedback Children’s right Learning circle- Challenge 2:
We really liked it that we could make a school in Minecraft. It was really fun to make contact with people from other countries It was too simple There was a time difference of 5 hours and now is the time difference 6 hours. The Wi-Fi was really bad in both schools. Unfortunately is it almost ending. Goodbye from 2HA1

Dear students,
that's great to read about your Skype appointment! Looking at your Challenge 1, I think you can share a lot of experience about fundraising for school from Nepal and knowledge about the problems with the secondary education in some places of the world.

Thank you for you rich introductions, well done!!
Also we love to read your thoughts on education in Challenge 1; great to see that have contributed to rebuilding a school in Nepal.
A like the English expression "put you money where your mouth is" and that is what you guys did! Super!
